This worker honey bee just crawled out of a flower of Amaryllis belladonna, called a Naked Lady. This beautiful lily is native to South Africa. This bee is combing pollen off of her thorax and packing it on to the pollen baskets of her rear legs to carry back to the hive. The pollen is packed into cells of the honeycomb. Then nurse worker bees will consume the pollen and covert it to royal jelly to feed to the baby bees, larva, and also to the queen bee. Royal jelly is a highly nutritious food high in protein and other nutrients. |
